Boy Jones ........... Brooklyn born, Barson
Unique Jones - grew up under the influence of
nine legendary hip-hop emcees known to the world
as Wu Tang Clan. One of the founders and leaders
of the group was his father, Russell Jones – the
late great & beloved Ol' Dirty Bastard, his
cousins were GZA, the wordsmith of the group and
The RZA, the producer of the multiplatinum super
group. Jones had
mostly remained on the sideline as an admirer of
the music being created by his family. But one
day at nine years old of age, his father called
him to perform verses on his song “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”, at the world famous Apollo stage in Harlem.
From that day forward he always felt an urge to
perform. His father thought he was just playing
games when he would ask to go in the booth to
record and would always respond by telling his
son “you cant rap.” Barson decided to form a
group with a friend called “Bang Out” at the age
of sixteen and began to further develop his
writing and performing skills. Convinced by
Jones’ years of determination and focus, RZA
decided to give him a shot in the booth. That
trial effort gained Boy Jones the official stamp
of approval when his first recording was later
released on an official Wu Tang production. To
top it all off, Rza signed Boy Jones to his Wu
Music Group record label in the spring of 2009.
Boy Jones raps with
a unique freestyle flow and has an unorthodox
writing style. He made a lasting impression to
music lovers all over the country when he joined
the original members of Wu Tang Clan on the Rock
The Bells tour. Boy Jones was a natural as he
entertained crowds of up to 70,000 fans. His
crazy and high energy performances instantly
became a hit, and when he performed his father's
classics like "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and "Brooklyn
Zoo", the crowds went absolutely bananas!! The
fact that he looks and sounds exactly like his
father doesn’t hurt either.
Boy Jones
has been featured on Lord Jamar's “5 Percent”
album, and RZA’s soundtracks for “The Protector”
and “Afro Samurai”. He was featured in XXL
magazine and interviewed by BET at the 2008 BET
Hip Hop Awards. He is currently working on his
first solo music project and looking at various
touring opportunities. He recently dropped
his first single before the end of the year and
release his album in the spring of 2010. Not
limiting himself to music only, Boy Jones is
also interested in film & television projects as
well as licensing and endorsement deals. He’s
also eagerly awaiting an upcoming documentary
and possible feature film on the life of Ol’
Dirty Bastard. When he’s not in the studio, Boy
Jones enjoys giving back to the community.
Having witnessed the devastating affects of
drugs first-hand, he’s interested in speaking to
teens about the dangers of drug and alcohol
abuse. While he might be known within the Wu
fans circle he has not properly been introduced,
hence Young Dirty Bastard gets online to chat
with Wu-International and answer some of the
questions the fans have for him. Enjoy...

Wu-Int
would like to say thanks first and foremost for
agreeing to do this and taking the time to answer
these questions, highly appreciated, and will also
point out that nothing will be altered, edited or
changed when this is published online.
Wu-International: Boy
Jones, what’s good man?
Boy Jones:
Well I am good
but first I wanna say the song "MILLION DOLLAR" was
just a gimmick.. come on I’ve been rapping since I
was a youngin! the world really don’t think I got
something up my sleeves, my father was a scientist..
and I’m also tryna get a mix tape with DJ absolute
started, and tryna rap on everyone's beats on
MySpace for them to promote it and I’m coming,
coming like sperm
Wu-International:
So let’s dive into the name Boy Jones, you were
initially called young dirty bastard and now Boy
Jones, how did the names come about?
Boy Jones:
People called me young dirty because of my father,
but young dirty bastard definitely don’t fit my
style it my poppa style. With Boy Jones I can rap
about anything with that shit.. if I would have used
Young Dirty Bastard, it would have slaved me in so
many ways.
Wu-International:
Both names
are closely linked with your father Ol’ Dirty
Bastard (RIP), some fans might say you are trying to
milk it by not using something totally different,
what do you say?
Boy Jones: On the real tip my name is Bar-Sun
Unique. The leave does not fall far from the tree,
its only customary I have my fathers surname, but
about the names, I pretty much got power over every
little thing I’m doing.
Wu-International:
Any other names you go by apart from the ones we
know?
Boy Jones:
Well I like to use
baby Jesus a lot.
Wu-International:
How old are you?
Boy Jones:
Right now I am 20
Wu-International: You
are Wu blood kin being born onto the Wu legacy, how
do you feel being born into one of the greatest
hip-hop movement ever?
Boy Jones:
Um.. I don’t feel, I mean, its not something you
feel, its something you just breathe, like when a
tadpole is in the water, then he evolves in to a
frog. He don’t feel it, its just there.
Wu-International:
How long have you been making music and what
prompted you to take the same path as your father?
Boy Jones: As long as the triangle has been
alive to the third mind... and for the love of what
he did, I have been doing it that long.
Wu-International:
Fans would like to know if you have recorded any
song with you father while he was alive?
Boy Jones:
One song but I
was too young and don’t remember the name of it, RZA
should know.
Wu-International:
ODB was a legend in his own right, he will forever
live on through his music, Wu-tang and you, how
would you say his death has affected you as a son as
well as musically?
Boy Jones:
As a son, it’s a great loss to lose a father,
musically I will like to say first of all we cant
rap together, we cant even drink OLD E together, we
couldn’t have even gone FOOD STAMP shopping
together, "the world sucks like a nasty whore, she’s
suckin and suckin until she cant suck no more"
Wu-International:
How was it
performing “shimmy shimmy ya” at the age of 9 at the
Apollo Stage in Harlem?
Boy Jones: I
was having fun with my family. it felt like I was
playing tag on the streets.
Wu-International:
Apparently you father did not initially nurture you
music interest that resulted you in forming your
group “Banged Out”, can you please tell us more
about this and who your partner was?
Boy Jones:
That’s correct,
it was a bunch of us rapping together (Assassin,
Pream, Mario Scario, etc..)
|
|
 |
Wu-International:
So when did you finally get your shot and how?
Boy Jones:
I really don’t know how to answer that one..
Wu-International:
Ok, lets rephrase
it differently, right now you are mentored and
guided by The RZA, how and when did you start
working with your uncle musically and how does it
feel to work with a genius like him?
Boy Jones:
First of all Rza
is far from being very talented, from the moon to
the stars from the politics to the Wu- Tang, How you
think he still in this game? it don’t feel like I am
working with him.. it feel more like he is teaching
me, that’s right, he is my teacher, but I’m also MY
OWN TEACHER!!
|
|
Wu-International:
Is he strict on
you as to what he allows you to do and what would
you say you have learnt so far working with him?
Boy Jones:
Rza lets me do
what I want to do because I have a plan, think
Batman and Robin, unlike the joker that’s why he
failed.. he's taught me the power of the brain!
Wu-International:
What is your
current relationship with the rest of the clan
members and which ones are you closer to?
Boy Jones:
None of them they
haven’t done shit for me!
Wu-International:
GZA/Genius is also related to you, his son young
justice is also in the game just like you, how close
are you with Young justice and what are the chances
of both of you doing more collabo?
Boy Jones:
We used to be mad
close actually, I want to call this dude and tell
him we need to do a whole album together just me and
him with the RZA and GZA behind it.
Wu-International:
That would be a dream come true for fans, You were
both featured on Lord Jamar’s album “5% album” how
did that come about and do you follow the teaching
of the nation?
Boy Jones: I follow every teaching of
every nation, we was in the studio tryna do our own
shit, Young Jus and I and we just got lucky, we was
waiting for hours, had a rest and everything, Lord J
came through and made it happen!!!
Wu-International:
You are both seen as the younger generation of Wu
who will go on to carry on the name or brand, do you
feel under pressure to carry on such a legacy?
Boy Jones:
I used to be, but not no more, I am master of my
university now.
Wu-International:
You have gone on to collaborate on
Afro Samurai, and others such as one with Tash
Mahogany that originally featured Joe Budden, how
that collabo come about?
Boy Jones:
We be kickin it
all the time in the studio, I’m there, she there, we
addicted to the mic so logically we had to do
something together.
Wu-International:
Speaking of Joe
Budden, you must be aware of the situation and beef
that took place between him and the Wu camp, what’s
you take in all of that?
Boy Jones:
Well I believe all of that is just a trap. It’s like
how people join gangs, its a trap by you know who.
Wu-International:
Your father’s group Brooklyn Zu with the likes of 12
O Clock and Buddha Monk still carry the touch for
ODB as well, how involved are you with this group?
Boy Jones:
The only
one I am mostly around and talk to regularly is The
Zu Keeper.
Wu-International:
It would be
safe to assume that you are currently working on
your own project; can you please shed some light as
to working title, featured guests and producers?
Boy Jones:
No names or
titles yet but artists I have recorded with for my
project includes Tash Mahogany, Hblock hulligans,
Pream, Assassin and RZA.
Wu-International:
How many songs deep are you to completing it and
when you intend to get it out?
Boy Jones:
Don't really know
how many songs are going to be on my album it might
be a 100 songs on the album who knows
Wu-International:
: Is RZA
the executive producer of this project and
would it be coming out via Wu Music Group?
Boy Jones:
That’s
the plan but I don’t know yet
Wu-International:
What kind of concepts, topics will you be
covering on the album?
Boy Jones: Y’all gotta wait and see.
Wu-International:
Looking
forward to the album, so what makes Barson
Unique different?
Boy Jones:
You gonna
see.
Wu-International:
You have been touring with the RZA, I heard
the one in Canada was off the hook, how was
the tour for you?
Boy Jones: It was alright but mentally
it helped me out
Wu-International:
So
what do you do outside music, as in work,
school, hobbies etc?
Boy Jones:
I just
bought my high school diploma {Laughs}
|
 |
Wu-International:
Coming to the end of the interview, anything you
will like to say that’s not already covered?
Boy Jones: I bought my own ghetto
studio with tax money and I didn’t even have a job
so lets get it, (I’m out smartin the government)
it’s in my room with my two babies and my girl, its
real out here.
Wu-International:
Where or how can fans keep up to date with you?
Boy Jones:

www.youtube.com/planetfreedom7 ,
www.twitter.com/boyjonesodb and facebook.
Wu-International:
