Day 2: Tribute To A Fallen Knight

Day 2...
Continuing with the Doc Doom tribute week as part of the West Coast Killa Beez series, we had to interview Doc Doom's younger sister LaMonica Davis to find out more about DeShawn who's commonly and widely known to the world as Doc Doom, but before and after being an artist, he was also a brother, a friend, a son, a father and uncle, a nephew, and much more, Enjoy this interview.......

I like to say thanks first and foremost for taking the time to answer these questions, highly appreciated, and will also point out that nothing will be altered, edited or changed when this is published online.

Wu-International: Thanks for agreeing to do this.. Let's start off first by you introducing yourself, please tell us who you are, where you are from and your relationship to Doc Doom?

LaMonica: My name is LaMonica Davis, I'm Deshawn's (Doc Doom) little sister and I'm from Long Beach,  California.

Wu-International: Thanks, what’s your first memory of Doc’s musical interest as far as emceeing goes?
LaMonica: When he was put on the Swarm CD, We were so excited, my thoughts were: "he made it, he really made it....wow...." I was so proud of him, that was his dream/passion.... he made it!.

Wu-International: What was he like as a child, or a grown man? How would you describe him as person?
LaMonica:  Well I can't say too much about how he was as a child cause he's my older brother, but from what I remember, he was bright, funny, a jokester, he loved to have fun, very likeable, always smiling, outgoing, and a very caring person, made sure his friends never went without. He always had my back no matter what I did... He would fight for me ... As he grew older, life started setting into reality, he was the same Shawn with just a shield around his heart.....But he was very popular, he was that type of person when you were around him you couldn't help but to love or like him....

Wu-International: Are you a fan of hip-hop and what did you think of Doc’s rapping skills?
LaMonica:
Yes I'm am a fan....... I think my brother was the best.... I always looked up to him, so he's the best in my eyes and I'm so proud of him.

Wu-International: Did you get a chance to hear some of his music?
LaMonica:  Yes I did get a chance to hear some of his music, I know they (Black Knights) worked hard in the studio, so I can truly say I heard some of their music.

Wu-International: From what we gathered, Doc’s older brother was friends with Northstar members and that’s how Doc met Black Knights, what is your recollection of the Black Knights formation?
LaMonica:
DeShawn only has one other sibling, me and my baby brother CJ and I am not really sure how everything went down with the group's formation.

Wu-International: How did you get to find out they got picked by The RZA as part of the Wu-Tang Killa Beez and what were your thoughts?
LaMonica:
I found out through my mom at the time I lived out of State.... my thoughts on that was really {Laughs}.........Wow...I was so happy for him.

Wu-International: Doc moved to New York for a bit didn’t he?
LaMonica:
Yes, around 1998 till 2000

Wu-International: How did you get to hear about your brother’s death?
LaMonica:
My mom called me at 4am that morning, all she said was:" Moni, from that voice I knew what had happen, all I could say was: "Mama no, mama please don't tell me". She said: "Yes he's dead". I asked her what happened, and she said someone shot him.. my heart sunk down to my stomach and all I could do was cry....I couldn't get to her fast enough cause I lived in Washington State at the time.

Wu-International: We cannot imagine how you and the rest of the family felt, do you have a clue as to why he was shot?
LaMonica:
There is no real clear answer of why and who shot him, all we know is our beloved DeShawn is gone forever and that's unfair at times.

Wu-International: Have they ever caught the killer?
LaMonica:
No, we are angry and frustrated at the same time and still want justice to be served because they took more than just a nobody, he was loved, he was respected among his peers, he was a father, a big brother not only to me and my little brother, but a big brother in the community, he was a son, a grandson, nephew, cousin.....he had life and purpose and what a shame that someone could come and take another human's life at a drop of a dime....I wouldn't wish this feeling on my worst enemy....I don't want anyone to have to suffer from the hands of another heartless human.

Wu-International: Accept our condolences, you out of the other siblings have gone out of your way to make sure Doc’s legacy and his musical contribution will never be forgotten?
LaMonica: We have a MySpace page up for him........

Wu-International: Were you the closest to him from the rest of your siblings, and how would you want the fans to remember Doc?

LaMonica: I was his only sibling till my little brother came 17yrs later {Laughs}...but yes we were really close when we were younger but when you started growing up we drifted apart, I moved to Washington and started my family, he was doing his rap thing....so I didn't really know how famous he was until he died......I want the fans to remember him as a loving compassionate person, just  remember we all make mistakes, and that doesn't make you exempt because your famous...  remember the fun DeShawn, the bright DeShawn, cherish and embrace those good moments like when he tried to dive off the stage into the crowd   but no one caught him, that was funny.......every time you think about him a smile should comes across your face.

Wu-International: The Black Knights and others like Dexter Wiggle are also active in keeping his name alive, are you in touch with Crisis and Monk?
LaMonica: Yes Crisis and Monk make sure we know what's going on....Since I moved back I have been invited to a few shows.

Wu-International: Would you say his music is a means of comfort now he is gone or is it still too early and painful when you hear his music?
LaMonica: His music is a big comfort to me and my family, every time I hear his voice it makes me smile, and proud, it makes me say: "That's my brother". I want people to feel what I feel when I listen to my hero, I love watching him in video's. I love hanging out with some of his closest friends, but that's what brings peace of knowing my brother was loved, through all of these things.....especially when we do the honorary BBQ's around his birthday, just to see all the loved one's come around I love it so much....

Wu-International: Thanks for all your answers and contributions, anything else you would like to share with us that’s not already covered about Doc and what would be your parting words to the fans and anyone else reading this?
LaMonica:  All I ask is for you to be sensitive to us and the needs of our family, please don't add or twist my words around to make it pleasing to the itching ears of the readers, we are still dealing with his death day by day, while the world thinks it's a long time ago, it feels like yesterday and that's a hard thing to deal with. Having someone in your live for many years, then you go to sleep the next day and he's gone forever.... Also thank you so much for this tribute, thank you, thank you.

RIP Doc Doom (1976-2007)
